99% of people seek feedback from the wrong people. Here's why that's a bad idea.

A quick cheatsheet for finding out "Is it worth me speaking to this person". REMEMBER: Bad information isn't just wrong, it can waste months of your time.

1. Absolute beginners - Expect comments like “Have you seen what this guru wrote about this? It worked for them so it will work for you”

Usefulness rating: 1/10 - The blind leading the blind

2.The downtrodden - “Here are all the reasons your idea won’t work that I’ve seen”

Usefulness rating: 4/10 - You could find some pitholes not to fall into, but you need people who will tell you what might work, not just “your idea suck”. Pessimists give unactionable and thus unhelpful feedback.

Caveat: Sometimes your idea is so bad that this advice may be accurate and you should consider not doing it…

3. The experienced but still downtrodden “Your idea won’t work, I tried something similar”

Usefulness rating: 6/10: Try and only get advice from people who have done the thing you want to do before.

This is more relevant than the absolute beginners and the downtrodden (at least they’ve tried) but the fact that it wasn’t successful is useful for a few insights, and maybe it narrows your options…but you still don’t know how to DO the thing.

4. The true player: Thinks of the game totally differently.

Usefulness rating: 10/10:

You know you’re dealing with a genius or true player if they have the capacity to change your entire strategy or beliefs about something in one phonecall.

They have normally done the thing you want to do before, or work with people who have (even if it’s just through a private mastermind with a master of your industry, who has told them the secrets of that niche/industry.

Music to your ears if dealing with one of these people sounds like:

“You don’t need to be doing 90% of what you’re doing. The only thing that matters in this industry is XYZ. Do that and you’ll be successful”

The 5th type of person you can get feedback from: Me!
