A reminder of what you know you need to be doing (but aren't)
It has carried me throughout my entire career and will pay off dividends for years. And it's free!
If I hadn’t gone to that Reddit meet-up and met my first marketing hire, no investment.
If that advisor hadn’t just left Facebook and randomly been at my first ever pitch event, no investment.
If I hadn’t have met the head of the accelerator we got into at a random event, no second round of funding.
If I hadn’t been randomly asked to speak at an event in 2015, no public speaking.
If I hadn’t got to speak at sxsw v2v (which was cancelled a couple years later!) no American clients or connections.
If I hadn’t been asked to sign a reference for one of my old writers, I wouldn’t have known I could get the o1 visa = no moving to America.
If I hadn’t put on secret sauce conference then randomly asked Hermione Way to speak, no Jen Friel who made sure I had a client arriving in la. Without that I’d’ve had nothing.
Jay Alan Samit hadn’t been in the audience at the event I spoke at my second week in la, no “million dollars in a year” challenge your high made me work 10x harder.
If I hadn’t wrote a random post on hacker news “I can grow people’s twitters how do I make money”
I wouldn’t know Austen Allred made nearly $250k revenue on that book.
(let alone new clients and brand lift etc) leading to my biggest ever client for the entire time I was in lockdown.
It makes no sense to say “you’d’ve made it either way”
90% of businesses shut down within five years.
99% of people are not entrepreneurs.
The point of this post?
You need to reach 100 people for that 1 person to be golden.
At every point I was giving free advice, ideas, time to people offline and online, with one expectation of a return.
When you start trying to grab people’s emails and hammer them for sales immediately, they hate you, and you may make a quick buck but it won’t last.
I’ve asked the biggest influencers in the world, massive musicians, you name it, for the “secret” of being big online.
The answer is always “make content everyday”
“But I don’t have time!”
Replace your scrolling time with creating time.
Now you have time.
(Im writing this on a train right now!)
If you don’t know what to create content about, here are some past articles I’ve written to help you overcome this common problem:
