HOW TO GET PEOPLE TO DO WHAT YOU WANT in 2023: The art of asking
"Shy kids don't get fed". If you're too shy to ask, you will struggle this year. Here's my cheatsheet for (ethically) getting what you want this year:
1. Make it easy for people to say yes
People are TOO LAZY TO THINK. If you want an endorsement or testimonial, write it out for them, then ask if they can e-sign or ok it. Far more will say yes this way
Make a list of the 30 smartest people you know and stay in touch with them
- offer them value, give them feedback on their websites, bring them clients etc. These are your most valuable contacts.
2. Rise people’s ego’s UP, and they will be DOWN for you
When posting in other people’s Facebook groups, don’t say “I want feedback” (selfish) say “Are there any UX experts who could look over my site, looking for people who really know their stuff, I’m a noob”
- Entrepreneurs love being told they’re experts 🤓
3. Some people don’t want to hear what you have to say
I used to think the best way to serve people was to give them my opinion on how they can improve on what they’re working on.
WRONG - As we learn entrepreneur “stuff”, it;s tempting to be “junior advice giver”…make sure they actually want your advice first…
IF they feel like you are “telling them what to do”, you rile up their insecurities (people get defensive when you tell them what to do)
Basically: It can serve you more to say less.
4. A golden rule easily forgotten: People will say YES way more than you’d believe.
You would not believe the stories I’ve heard from people cold emailing/messaging huge CEO’s, artists, celebrities, and getting a response or deal out of it.
But try not to come out of nowhere with an ask if they don’t know who you are
You can be to the point (sending “hey how are you?” feels like what you “should” do but they have no context of what you want so they’ll ignore you…be direct and to the point, people will appreciate it. Also, it’s far better if they can see your content on your feed is legitimate - Many people will check before they reply. If you’re sending messages from your personal Facebook profile, your profile better tell them what you do in your bio, and you shouold be posting relevant content to your industry.
