Lessons learned from Tim Ferriss, one of the best to ever do it.
I reverse-engineered why his content is devoured by his massive audience, even after over 15 years of him putting it out. Here's what I learned:
His genius is simple:
Only the best stuff, no fluff.
Wanna know why I’m such a fan?….
His last two books “Tools of Titans” and “Tribe of Mentors”
Are the ***only*** two business books I read in the years he put them out.
(I’ll do another post soon on why you should read a LOT of books
Before you start, as you won’t have time to read once the business is going)
He did the opposite of what most people do in books.
Most people (and now I’ve pointed this out you are gonna see it everywhere lol)
Do the following:
1. Lots of stories about the authors’ experiences but little actual value.
2. There is an argument that people want to be entertained, which is true, but that’s what Netflix is for.
3. If I’m reading a business book, I *better* be putting the book down every 5 minutes to make notes or email my team an idea or strategy.
For entertainment I’ve got Westworld, Billions, and Succession on HBO and you want to tell me an anecdote about where you grew up when I’m tryna learn?
Nah famalam, can’t be working with those terms.
4. Most business books are really just sales letters disguised as books.
Tell tale signs are constant links to other things they sell, unnecessary mentions of their coaching programs, etc.
5. Most books don’t hit you in the head with killer ideas.
A book should be a writers’ BEST content, not a rehash of old blog posts or stuff you can find on Google.
Tim Ferris had close to zero personal stories in these books, had nothing to sell, and were full of thousands of ideas which could profoundly change your life.
Some changes in my own life after reading Tim Ferriss books:
> I started doing floatation tanks. A life-changing experience. I even brought my mum along to try one once haha
> I started playing Tetris after he revealed it’s been shown to deeply relieve stress. I play it almost every day.
> Low-carb diet for energy
> He was the first to introduce the idea of nootropics to me, which were life-changing for me in the year I made a million dollars in my first 12 months in America (I took Aniracetam by Health Naturals, no affiliate link ‘cos…you should do your own research before trying things off the internet ha)
> Meditation, I finally “got it” recently, after reading a technique in one of his books
I’ve just realized this is only the second ever post on substack I’ve ever written where I’ve talked about someone else other than me LOL (shoutout Mr. Beast the other one)
But yah, some things are both mainstream AND good, like Kendrick Lamar, Breaking Bad, and Domino’s Pizza.
